CHILDBIRTH SUPPORT
*Naturopathic Receipts*

As a doula, I support parents and their families throughout their pregnancy, their birth and the first hours of postpartum happiness to help them have a safe, satisfying and stimulating birthing experience. I provide evidence-based, factual information resources, physical comfort and emotional support to parents and their families encouraging them to advocate for their ideal childbirth.

No matter where or how you plan to give birth, I will be your cheerleader, your advocate and your constant support. I will be there, behind you, listening to you, supporting you and encouraging you. Always. I will be there to laugh with you, cry with you, and all that the birthing experience entails. Childbirth is a transformative experience, the sanctity of which I will protect for you, at all costs.

Pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum are a vulnerable time for pregnant people, so I make sure to give the parents I accompany the same love and positivity as if they were from my own family.

By their presence, Doulas have a positive influence on the progress of childbirth. Indeed, with the medicalization of childbirth, the hospital environment is sometimes intimidating for pregnant people and their partners who can then feel vulnerable. Childbirth is an event surrounded by novelty and the unknown. The role of the companion is therefore to support the parents in this adventure.

By offering constant emotional support, Doulas help reduce anxiety and fear in the person giving birth and the person accompanying them. The expectant parents then develops greater self-confidence. Several studies indicate that Doulas could have the following advantages:

  • Increase the chances of having a spontaneous vaginal birth;

  • Decrease the caesarean section rate;

  • Reduce labour time;

  • Reduce the use of synthetic oxytocin;

  • Reduce the use of epidurals;

  • Reduce the use of forceps or the suction cup;

  • Promote the initiation of body/chest/breast feeding;

  • Increase satisfaction with childbirth;

  • Increase the feeling of control;

  • Decrease the risk of depression.

Doulas would thus reduce the recourse to medical interventions. Most people would therefore gain some benefit from their presence at their birth.

*** Note that the birth companion (Doula) is not a health professional. They are therefore not responsible for pregnancy monitoring and cannot perform technical procedures during childbirth. For example, they cannot do a vaginal exam or make a diagnosis. However, this allows them to have an egalitarian relationship with the parents they support and to help them obtain the desired childbirth experience. Their role is therefore complementary to that of other health professionals such as doctors, nurses or midwives.
